Requirements for 6th Grade Students

Enrolled in Pre-Algebra

Your child is enrolled in Pre-Algebra as a 6th grader.  In order for your child to demonstrate success in this advanced course of study in math this school year, your child must meet the following criteria:

•     All 6th grade students enrolled in Pre-Algebra must demonstrate excellent work habits,

      behavior and attendance.

•     All 6th grade students enrolled in Pre-Algebra must earn a “B” grade or better at the

end of the first quarter.  Grades will be based primarily upon student achievement on

classroom tests, with a small portion of the grade based upon homework completion.

•     All 6th grade students enrolled in Pre-Algebra who earn a “C” grade at the end of the first quarter will be recommended to move to Middle School Math, the regular 6th grade math class, but may be allowed to remain in Pre-Algebra.  However, these students must earn a “B” grade or better at the end of the second quarter in order to remain in the Pre-Algebra class.

•     All 6th grade students enrolled in Pre-Algebra who earn a “D” or “F” grade at the end of the first quarter or second quarter will be moved out of Pre-Algebra and into Middle School Math.

•     All 6th grade students enrolled in Pre-Algebra must (1) earn a minimum 4-quarter grade

point average of 3.00 in Pre-Algebra AND (2) pass the Pre-Algebra Final Exam by scoring 70% or higher AND (3) score either “Proficient” or “Advanced” on the Grade 6 Math CST, in order to be promoted to Algebra 1 in 7th grade.  Students who earn less than a 3.00 GPA in Pre-Algebra this year OR are unable to pass the Pre-Algebra Final Exam OR are unable to score “Proficient” or “Advanced” on the Grade 6 Math CST will repeat Pre-Algebra in 7th grade.

Exception:  Students who earn a 2.75 GPA in Pre-Algebra (3 “Bs” and 1 “C”), with the “C” occurring in the either the first or second quarter, will be meet the GPA criteria and will promoted to Algebra 1 in 7th grade if the student passes the Pre-Algebra Final Exam and scores “Proficient” or “Advanced” on the Grade 6 Math CST.

Your child’s math teacher will contact you if your child is performing below the grade standards listed above.  In the event that your child is moved to Middle School Math, he or she may have the opportunity to accelerate in math in the future.
